Earl Ray Sykes, 73, of Guthrie, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025. He was born on February 15, 1952, in Guthrie, Oklahoma to John Dell Sykes and Ruby Jewel (Collins) Sykes. Earl lived a life of service, leadership, and compassion, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations.
Earl was a devoted educator, dedicating his entire professional life to Guthrie Public Schools, where he served with distinction as a teacher, coach, Athletic Director, Junior High Principal, and High School Principal. In every role, he worked tirelessly to support students, staff, and the broader school community. He believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and led with integrity, fairness, and unwavering commitment.
Earl was also a lifelong supporter of the Guthrie Bluejays. Whether he was coaching on the sidelines, cheering from the stands, or leading from the front office, his pride in Guthrie’s students and athletes was unmatched. In addition to the love he had for his hometown team, Earl was an enthusiastic fan of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, proudly wearing orange and black and following OSU sports with passion and loyalty. He also had a deep-rooted love for the New York Yankees, keeping up with every season, win or lose. His devotion to these teams reflected his enduring spirit and steadfast loyalty.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Beverly Sykes; his daughter, Amy Sykes Ingle, and her husband, Shawn, of Guthrie; his daughter, Jillian Sykes, of Guthrie; and his son, Kyle Sykes, also of Guthrie. Earl was a proud and devoted grandfather to Brent Ingle, Savannah Ingle, Greyson Sykes, Lorelai Sykes, and Anniston Sykes, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. Earl is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, John Dell Sykes and Ruby Jewel (Collins) Sykes, of Guthrie; and his siblings Bobby Sykes, Flora Ann Boman, Jeweletta “Punkin” Huddleston, and Clint Dickson.
Earl’s quiet strength, sense of humor, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His legacy is one of leadership, kindness, and an enduring love for education and community.
A memorial service to celebrate Earl’s life and legacy will be held on Sunday, May 18th at 2:00 PM at Guthrie High School Gymnasium located at 200 North Crooks Drive in Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home in Guthrie.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Earl’s honor to Guthrie Education Foundation, supporting the educational values he championed throughout his life.
Though he may be gone, Earl Ray Sykes will live on in the hearts of all who knew him— and every time the Bluejays take the field or the Cowboys run onto the turf, his spirit will be there, cheering them on. And come every spring, when the Yankees take the mound in the Bronx, you can bet Earl will be there in spirit too, rooting for his beloved team with the same passion and loyalty he brought to every aspect of his life.
