Guthrie Junior High tennis teams take first at Carl Albert tourney

Guthrie tennis cleaned house at the Carl Albert Junior High Tournament on Thursday, with both GJH’s boys’ and girls’ teams earning a first-place finish by the end of all singles and doubles matches.

The Lady Jays won both doubles brackets and both consolation brackets in the singles events. Laina Woodward battled back from an early loss to win the No. 1 Singles consolation, and Savannah Schlueter picked up a win in the No. 2 Singles.

As for the doubles brackets, Natalia Acosta and Taylor Shipley were perfect on the day as they took home first place in the No. 1 Doubles tournament, while Lillie Benton and Teagan Duehning swept through the No. 2 Doubles bracket for the first-place win.

The Guthrie boys saw one duo win a first-place medal in the No. 1 Doubles; Drake Shelton and Cayden Shipley, as well as two runner-up Jays in the No. 1 and 2 Singles. Cayden Haynes’ only loss came in the 1 Singles final and Bowen Ingram fell in the 2 Singles final after winning his first and semifinal round matchups.

Finally, Trenton Edberg and Cash Huskey took home third place in the No. 2 Doubles.

Both the GJH boys' and girls’ teams followed up their wins with matches at the Edmond Qualifier over the weekend, and now will return to Edmond Center Court on Tuesday for a match with Choctaw junior varsity.
