Guthrie, Cashion hoops prep for Regional tournaments

Previewing Guthrie and Cashion’s postseason matchups

The Oklahoma high school basketball 2024-25 regular season has officially come to an end and the hunt for a state title is now underway.

Boys’ and girls’ teams across the state have been placed into their Regional brackets and will compete over the next two weeks for a spot in their respective state tournaments, including all four Logan County squads. Guthrie’s teams are set to play in the Class 5A East Regionals, while Cashion faces the Class 2A Area IV Regionals after both Wildcats’ teams won their district games last week.

Coach Nathan Pennypacker and the Guthrie boys’ team will travel to Tulsa Memorial on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 27-28, to play in a four-team tourney for a chance to qualify for the East Area tournament. The Bluejays, who finished the regular season 3-18 (1-13), will face Tulsa Memorial in round one at 6 P.M., Thursday.

Should they win, Guthrie will play the winner of Shawnee and Tahlequah in the Regional championship.

Guthrie’s girls’ squad kicks off Regional action on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Durant Regional. They’ll face Durant in the opening round, then either Bishop Kelley or Tahlequah in the final with a win. Coach Joshua Smith’s team went 2-19 (2-12) this season and hopes to make it back to the Area Tournament after missing out last year.

Both Cashion’s boys’ and girls’ teams advanced to their respective Class 2A Regional winner’s bracket after pulling out wins over Stroud at their own hosted District matchups last Saturday to become District 6 champs. Coach John Hardaway’s Wildcats defeated the Tigers, 66-49, and will now face Luther in the first round of the Region C tournament on Friday, Feb. 21, at Stroud High School.

The Wildcats ended the regular season at 19-7 overall.

Meanwhile, the Cashion girls won big over Stroud, 61-24, to advance to the Region C tournament on Friday, where they’ll play Minco at 6 P.M. A win there will pit coach Andrea Taylor’s crew against either Latta or Stratford on Monday, Feb. 24.

Taylor’s team finished 17-9 this season.
