GHS wrestling kicked off winter break with a fourth-overall team finish at the 2024 Southern Oklahoma Invitational tournament in Duncan in what was their final event of 2024.
The Bluejays had five wrestlers finish top five in their respective weight class with Bryson Hall even earning Outstanding Wrestler after coming in first in the 175. Guthrie ended the two-day event with 154.5 total team points behind third-place Cache, runner-up Duncan and champion Chickasha.
Bryson Hall picked up four tech fall victories and a win by major decision in the final match of the 175 while being responsible for 31 of Guthrie’s total points. He defeated Duncan’s Izaya Elix to win his weight class and stays undefeated in his matches this season at 10-0.
Roston Uselton also won first place in the 190-pound bracket after defeating three of his opponents by fall and one by narrow decision. He pinned Comanche’s Kanon Clift in the first-place match in what was a rematch of the two’s matchup at Guthrie and Comanche’s head-to-head dual back on Dec. 12, which is Uselton’s only loss this season.
Kaedin Herendeen picked up a second-place finish after falling in the championship match of the 120-pound tournament to Chickasha’s Canaan Brummett. Clayton Carey came in fourth in the 165, Wyatt Silvis was fifth in the 215 and Joel Landry was sixth in the 106.
Guthrie earns a top-five tournament finish for the first time this season after finishing 18th at Mid America Nationals earlier this month. Coach Jadon Davenport’s team is 2-2 in duals so far with wins over Perry and Comanche. They’re off until the start of the spring semester when they face Blackwell in a dual on Jan. 9.
