Guthrie Pet Blessing at Mineral Wells Park

From dogs and cats to birds and turtles - even horses - all pets are welcome at Trinity Episcopal Church’s annual community Blessing of the Pets service.

This year, the event takes place on Saturday, October 19, from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. at Mineral Wells Park. Treats for your pets, as well as free hot dogs and refreshments for pet parents, will be provided, along with pet healthcare information and rabies shots for dogs and cats at the discounted price of $15.

What’s a Pet Blessing? In October, we remember Saint Francis of Assisi, the Christian patron saint of animals. During that month, animal blessing services are held throughout the world to celebrate all creatures great and small.

Beginning shortly after 11 a.m., the Rev. Robby Trammell, Trinity Episcopal’s vicar, will conduct a brief Blessing of the Pets service at Mineral Wells’ pavilion. He will then bless pets individually as they arrive until the event ends at 1 p.m., giving each pet owner a certificate to commemorate this special occasion.

“It’s just a good thing for pets and families,” says Trinity’s Senior Warden Linda Pruitt. “Like humans, pets need blessings, too!”

Pets also need to be healthy, and Dr. Raymond Zinn, owner of Vet Corner, east of Guthrie, will be administering $15 rabies shots, paid by cash only, from 12 p.m. till 1 p.m. Basic pet healthcare information will be available as well, courtesy of Yukon veterinarian Kim McCormack.

Many animals need adopting, too. Currently, says Dorthy Morris director of the Guthrie Animal Shelter, there are, on average, 12 dogs available, including puppies, along with 15 cats and kittens.

Three local rescue organizations will be attending this event with pets ready to take home: Guthrie Animal Shelter, Free to Live, and Saved by Grace Dog Rescue. In addition, local non-profit Helping Community Paws and Claws (HCPCOK.org) will provide information about how to obtain lowcost spaying and neutering services.

Trinity Episcopal encourages pets and their owners to attend the Blessing of the Pets service and stay for low -cost rabies shots, free hotdogs, cookies, and drinks, plus karaoke to add to the fun!
