Guthrie Marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Parade

On January 19, Guthrie came together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of celebration and reflection. Mayor Adam Ropp designated the day as Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Day, saying, “This day is not only about paying tribute to one individual, but also about commemorating a living legacy of courage, sacrifice, and moral clarity.”

Despite the cold January weather, spectators and participants filled the streets to take part in the city’s annual parade. The parade was led by marshals Mitchell “Iffy” Pierce and Parish “Papa” Pierce, who guided civic organizations, local churches, and other participants along the route, carrying banners, waving flags, and sharing messages of unity and hope. Spectators lined the sidewalks, bundled against the cold, cheering and waving as the procession passed by.

The event was organized by the Logan County Branch of the N.A.A.C.P., which worked to ensure that the parade and accompanying ceremony honored Dr. King’s enduring legacy. Following the parade, a ceremony was held to further recognize Dr. King’s impact. Community leaders, citizens, and students gathered to reflect on his message of justice and equality, sharing readings, speeches, and performances that celebrated his vision for a more inclusive society.

The event served as both a reminder of the progress made and a call to action for continued dedication to the values Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. championed.
