School board hires new GUES principal, head softball coach

The Guthrie Board of Education Monday night approved the hiring of Michelle Wilson-Adams to be the next principal at Guthrie Upper Elementary School.

She replaces Jeff Ball who served the district for 29 years, most recently as the GUES Principal for the 2023-24 school year.

Wilson-Adams comes to Guthrie following a sevenyear stint at Oklahoma City Public Schools including six years as an Assistant Principal at Rogers and Taft Middle Schools.

She was most recently the campus administrator at the Linwood Campus of Taft Middle School serving 5th graders. She has also served as a special education teacher and administrative intern at Enid High School and an Adjunct Instructor for Northern Oklahoma College on the Enid campus.

“We are excited to welcome Ms. Adams to our family. She has 25 years of experience in education at various levels and with many different demographics. She will be a great addition to the GUES staff and an asset to our district,” said Guthrie Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson.

The school board also approved a change in title of Jay Benson who had served as the GUES Administrative Intern for the 2023-24 school year to the title of Assistant Principal; and approved the hiring of Kara Tarrant as the next head coach of the Guthrie Lady Jays softball team. She replaces Booker Blakley.

In other matters, State Rep. John Talley of Stillwater presented Simpson with a citation from the State of Oklahoma for being named Superintendent of the Year.

The Oklahoma Association of School Administrators (OASA) announced that Simpson was named the 2024 OASA State Superintendent of the Year. He was also honored as the OASA District 3 Superintendent of the Year.
