Oklahoma Primary Sets Key August Runoffs

Oklahoma voters narrowed the field for several statewide and legislative races during the June 16 primary election, with five Republican contests advancing to runoff elections in August.

The closest statewide race was the Republican gubernatorial primary, where Attorney General Gentner Drummond received 105,832 votes, or 26.25%, narrowly edging Mike Mazzei, who earned 104,691 votes, or 25.97%. Because no candidate secured a majority, the two will meet in an Aug. 25 runoff.

Four other Republican races also advanced to runoffs. Robert Franklin and James Taylor will face off for Superintendent of Public Instruction after finishing first and second with 22.59% and 19.68%, respectively. Kevin West and John Pfeiffer advanced in the Labor Commissioner race, while Bob Sullivan and Marty Quinn moved on in the Insurance Commissioner balloting.

In House District 38, Madison Bolay led a six-candidate field with 31.55% of the vote and will face Danielle Deterding, who received 26.51%, in an August runoff.

Several statewide Republican races were decided outright. T.W. Shannon won the Lieutenant Governor nomina- tion with 53.76% of the vote, while Jon Echols captured the Attorney General nomination with 55%. Cindy Byrd secured the State Treasurer nomination with 61.65%, and Brad Boles won the Corporation Commissioner nomination with 55.27%.

In the Republican U.S. Senate primary, Congressman Kevin Hern dominated the field with 267,222 votes, or 69.76%, to secure the nomination.

Locally, Sen. Chuck Hall won re-election in Senate District 20, defeating Mark LeMarr 56.44% to 43.56%.

Senate District 28 produced one of the closest races in the state, with Grant Green defeating Robert Trimble by just 66 votes, 5,837 to 5,771. Republican legislative winners also included Collin Duel in House District 31, Jim Shaw in House District 32 and Molly Jenkins in House District 33.

On the Democratic side, Cyndi Munson won the gubernatorial nomination with 74.93% of the vote. Jennettie Marshall secured the superintendent nomination, Rhonda Eastman won the Corporation Commissioner race and N'kiyla Jasmine Thomas captured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

Voters also rejected State Question 832, with 55.37% voting against the proposal and 44.63% voting in favor.
