It was a tough week for the Lady Bluejays as they had three games to finish up the season and went 1-2 on the week, beating Southeast and losing to Del City and Piedmont.
The good news was that senior Anjewl Murillo went over 1,000 points scored in he Bluejays career of four years. Head Coach Breck Clark presented a ball and made the announcement at halftime of the boy’s game. Murillo had 19 points Friday night against Piedmont to close out the regular season in a game that the Lady Wildcats won 67-43.
The game was not pretty as the Lady Bluejays had eight personnel fouls and two technical called on them in the first quarter alone. By the end of the first half, it was 41-17 in favor of Piedmont. The game was a sharp contrast to eight days ago when the game when into overtime before Piedmont pulled out a 49-46 win.
The week started with a 62-31 win over Southeast, that Guthrie led 23-6 after the first quarter and 43-10 at the half. Nine of the 11 players who saw action in the game scored, with Murillo and Braydin Russell leading the way with 12 points each. Ania Morgan chipped in with ten points.
In the Del City game, Guthrie led 42-37 going into the fourth quarter and got outscored 23-13 to come out on the short end of a 60-55 decision. Guthrie was 5-for10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and was 10for-20 in the game, while the Eagles were 7-for-9 in the fourth quarter and 11for-15 on the game from the charity stripe.
Murillo led the team in scoring for the Lady ‘Jays with 23 points with help from Mariah Dightman with 13 points.
Guthrie (12-11) travels to Piedmont Thursday night for their regional opener against Noble (814) a team they have already beat twice this season. Tip-off is 6 p.m. The winner gets a Saturday game with the winner of the Piedmont (17-6) and Santa Fe South (6-12)game that follows the Guthrie game. Saturday’s game is a 2 p.m. game. Tickets are $10 for each game and can be purchased online through the OSSAA website.
