Guthrie High’s Lady Bluejays opened their slow-pitch season last week with home losses to Newcastle, 14-7, and to Deer Creek, 21-10.
In the opening game, Guthrie led Newcastle 6-3 after three innings, and it was 7-7 after four. But the Racers pushed across seven runs in the final three innings.
Shelbey Smedley and Katelynn Siess accounted for four of Guthrie’s eight hits. Siess took the loss while walking eight and yielding all 15 hits.
In the second game, Guthrie pushed across nine runs against Deer Creek in the second inning to take a short-lived 10-8 lead. The Lady Antlers tied the game 10-10 after three innings, and then scored 11 runs in the next six innings to end the game on a run rule.
Siess led the way with three hits, including a double. Ava Hebensperger and Saylor Hamilton each had two hits, with Hebensperger having the only other extra-base hit, a double.
The Lady Bluejays had nine hits but were unable to take full advantage of 11 walks. Deer Creek had 18 hits and collected 13 walks.
Guthrie is on Spring Break this week and will host Western Heights on March 21 and then travel to the Hennessey Tournament on March 24-25.
