Guthrie’s Thanksgiving events connect community

The spirit of giving:

November is a time for friends, family and the community to connect and give thanks.

And, in Guthrie, it's no different as several free, family-friendly events are taking place throughout Thanksgiving week.

On Saturday, November 23, American Legion Lebron Post No. 58 is hosting its annual musical to help raise additional funds for the public feast later that week. The musical will feature local talent and will take place at 6 p.m. in First Baptist Church, 401 South Broad Street.

Guthrie Public Library is hosting back-to-back events on November 27. The first is called “Sit, Stay, Read!” from 11 a.m. to noon, a time for children to read to dogs while improving their oral reading skills. “Thanksgiving Cartoon” takes place from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m., which will showcase a short cartoon and traditional holiday snacks, such as popcorn, pretzel sticks and candy.

Logan County NAACP invites the public for its 27th annual General Tommy Daniels Thanksgiving Feast at American Legion Lebron Post 58., from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at 123 North First Street. It was 27 years ago when Brigadier General Daniels, from Guthrie, wanted to give back to his community, so he started the feast with the collaboration of his peers. They began raising money to purchase food and now average about 600 people each year.

Feasts made with the money raised have been shared all around town, especially for those at the county jail, Job Corps and Langston University for those who do not have a family to go back home to on Thanksgiving.

Since cafeterias at schools and jails, and Meals on Wheels, are typically closed on Thanksgiving, feasts will be distributed by the Guthrie Territorial Riders.

“It has been a rewarding experience because we feed a lot of people and provide leadership opportunities in the community,” Reverend Hersey Hammons said. “It’s great to show people that we care through our numerous volunteers in Guthrie, and it provides me an opportunity to do what I love, which is serving people.

“We’ve seen people who feel like there is no one who cares, but we invite everyone.'

The spirit of Thanksgiving continues to fill the Guthrie air with love and compassion for the entire community.
