Logan County’s Board of Commissioners on Monday approved a resolution accepting the donation of one female Fox Red Labrador from Big Thunder Kennels to the Sheriff ’s Department for narcotics detection.

“We have seen the puppy, it is AKC registered,” Sheriff Damon Devereaux said. “It is five months old and it will start training at about a year old. We haven’t had a canine in the county for quite some time, and this was a good opportunity to get one at no cost to us, except maintenance, through vet bills and stuff like that.”

Commissioners also approved authorizing the Sheriff ’s Department to submit a grant application to AKC Reunite for funding of training for a narcotic-detection canine. Devereaux said the grant is for up to $7,500, if awarded.

In other matters, Commissioners approved engaging Timberlake Construction for construction management services for the county’s six-story building project located directly across from the county courthouse.

The services would be for a Phase 1 feasibility study of the county property at a cost of $18,000.

Last week, Commissioners approved applying for a Rural Economic Action Plan Grant for laying rock on three miles of Luther Road. REAP grants are essential to providing communities, with populations under 7,000, the opportunities to improve their infrastructure and quality of life.

“We are going to try and get this (grant) inserted every year to get at least three miles done through the REAP grant,” District 2 Commissioner Kody Ellis said. “This is going to start at (Highway) 105 and heading south.”

In other matters, Commissioners approved service agreements with Cox Business for upgrades of internet services for the County Clerk, Treasurer and Assessor offices.

“This is to take those three offices over to fiber (optic internet),” County Clerk Troy Cole said. “Right now, they (Cox) are estimating eight to 10 weeks to complete.”

A fiber optic cable is a network cable that contains strands of glass fibers inside an insulated casing. They’re designed for long-distance, high-performance data networking, and telecommunications. Compared to wired cables, fiber optic cables provide higher bandwidth and transmit data over longer distances.

Commissioners also approved a resolution accepting a $200 donation from Karen Freeman to District 1 for culvert work; and a $700 donation from the Jamesfield Homeowners Association to District 1 for repaving roads in Jamesfield Addition.
