The Guthrie LadyJays split their weekend games in Piedmont last week to advance to the area round in Norman North tomorrow night. Guthrie beat Shawnee 41-36 on Feb. 27 to advance to the regional final last Saturday. In the regional final, the LadyJays got #2 Piedmont for the title game. While the final score was 57-37, that was not indicative of how hard the LadyJays played a good and deep Piedmont team. The LadyCats dropped 11-three pointers on the Guthrie team and the LadyJays had one for the whole game.

Piedmont made more from beyond the arc than inside as it was 11-8, three pointers over two point goals. Guthrie’s lone three-pointer came from junior Kyra Wheeler who was boxed in by the Piedmont defense all afternoon.

Guthrie kept it close in the first half, thanks to Anjewel Murillo and the driving to the basket that Piedmont had trouble with in the first half as she had all 16 points for Guthrie. The Lady Cats changed their defense and held Murillo to six points in the last half. Wheeler ended up with six points, Charli Shelton had five points to help in the second half. Madi Jones and McKenna Gatson had two points each to close out the scoring.

Guthrie trailed 14-12 after the first quarter and 24-16 at the half. The teams exploded for 33 points in the third quarter as Piedmont stretched the lead to 42-31. The home team kept the pressure on with their long distance shooting in the final stanza and stretched the final margin to 20 points.

The LadyJays got to the title game by beating Shawnee 41-36 on Feb. 27 for the second time this season. Guthrie led 23-15 at the half and 30-27 after three quarters to hang on for the win. Murillo led the way with 17 points. Gatson and Wheeler chipped in with nine and eight points respectively. Shelton had five points and Jones had two points to close out the scoring.

Guthrie (11-12) gets another chance to advance on Thursday night in Norman against El Reno (14-11). The LadyJays have lost twice this year, 50-37 in El Reno on Jan. 7 and 49-36 in Guthrie on Jan.31 in games that were closer than the score would indicate. The other side of the bracket has #4 Ardmore (21-4) playing #9 Del City (15-9) in the early game Thursday night at Norman North. Guthrie must win to advance to Saturday’s game at Moore High School.
