The days go by so fast. One day, you’re holding the hands of your little ones, sprinting door to door trick-or-treating at Halloween, and the next they’re heading toward high school graduation! Looking back, I really miss those days. I love my kids.
Psalm 127:3-5 says, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. As arrows are in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy, blessed, and fortunate is the man whose quiver is filled with them!…”.
Yes, children are truly a reward from God. How blessed we are to have them, even for only a short time. Children are “on loan” to us, from God. Our time with them is brief, before they venture out into this world on their own. The years fly by, and before we know it, the moments with our kids are suddenly replaced with tears as we watch them drive away to their college dorm, or to their own apartment.
Our primary responsibility as parents is clear, according to the Word of God. Yes, we want to physically provide for our children. Yes, we want to provide a loving, peaceful, nurturing environment as they grow up. But the way we provide direction toward true life, peace, joy and love for our children is by teaching them about, and encouraging them in, an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.
If you admit the Word of God is true…AND IT IS…then NOTHING truly matters more than God. Seek God FIRST, and He will take care of all else that you love...including your family. As Jesus Himself had said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt 6:33). Put God FIRST in your life, and you will become the ULTIMATE WITNESS to your children, and for their great benefit.
God has said to us; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deut 6:5-7). In other words, we are to have God’s words on our hearts, and upon our lips, at all times. And, we are to be teaching these words of God to our children at all times. We are to, “impress them on our children”…while at home, or outside the home, while we lie down, and while we get up.
The bottom line is, we are to look for EVERY opportunity to instruct our children about God. Not to, “tell them what to do with their lives”, but to “lead them to eternal life”. THAT’S THE TRUE LOVE OF A PARENT. Buying the best name-brand clothes, and the coolest cars and trucks for your children IS NOT showing them “true” love. Giving them lots of money, and sending them to the most expensive universities, IS NOT “providing for” their PRIMARY NEED. WHAT YOUR CHILDREN NEED IS A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST! Without this relationship, the Bible says, THEY WILL NOT inherit eternal life. EVEN WITH THE MOST EXPENSIVE CLOTHES ON THEIR BACKS, AND IN THE COOLESTCARS, OR THE FANCIEST HOUSE, OR THE BEST COLLEGE DEGREE…WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST…YOUR CHILDREN WILL NOT INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE!
So, I ask you now… Have you TRULY loved your children? Do they KNOW Christ? THAT’S PRIORITY NUMBER ONE. And it’s NEVER TOO LATE to start being a witness for Christ. Jesus changes lives, forever.
