Guthrie Lions Club Celebrates its 103rd Anniversary

Body
The Guthrie Lions Club, one of the oldest and largest civic clubs in Oklahoma, is celebrating its 103rd Anniversary this month. The Club, as a part of the world wide Lions Organization, has a focus on enhancement of eye sight and eye care locally and throughout the world. To that end, the Guthrie Lions Club has paid for hundreds of local eye exams and eye glasses through the years and has collected thousands of used glasses that are repurposed and distributed internationally to those in need. This year the club also has strategic initiatives to: provide eye screening exams for youth in Guthrie Elementary Schools; support the “Opening Eyes” program associated with the Oklahoma Special Olympics; and offer health and eye screening opportunities via the Oklahoma Lions Mobile Health Clinic. Steve Gentling, Club President says “The Club continually contributes to our community in a number of ways: in addition to student scholarships, we provide financial support to the Guthrie Public School’s monthly recognition of outstanding teachers and support staff members; we support high school students for the American Legion’s Boys State and Girls State Leadership program; and we have an active “Student of the Month” program. Our “Adopt a Street” initiative has been on-going for many years and we continually have representation in the many community festivals held throughout the year. The Guthrie Lions Club is a great community resource!”

Below is an excerpt from a column I wrote almost ten years ago: “Are we having school tomorrow?” I can still remember asking my parents that same question and the anticipation of a magical gift of a day off as a student with snow and ice on the ground. I always got so frustrated because they never announced school would be closed until the morning.
