Loneliness, isolation, social distancing. Our lives have been disrupted in ways we could not have imagined. While we know that now is not the time to leave the country or relax our commitment to social distancing, now is the time to think about our lives after the pandemic ends. What will we have learned? It is important to try to learn what the experience has taught us about ourselves and the world in which we live. We have an opportunity to find meaning and purpose amid our suffering. In fact, experiencing hard times shines a light on the things that truly matter. The things that give us purpose. It helps us to realize the things we are spending too much money, time or energy on and those things often can get in the way of our happiness and meaning.

My hope is that we come out of this crisis with a better understanding of how meaning and purpose grow in direct proportion to how much we invest in other people’s lives, in how much we contribute to what Martin Luther King Jr. called the “Beloved Community” – a community built on the values of justice, equal opportunity and love for one’s fellow humans. People feel distant.

People feel alone. Businesses are suffering. We need to continue to build our community that gives our lives meaning by doing what is necessary to take care of one another. One way we can do that, in the business community, is by shopping local.

It is no secret that our current reality has put all us all through a very trying time. Our faith in community has been tested. It has been heartwarming and encouraging to see people come together and lend a helping hand when needed. This is exactly why I want to encourage everyone to shop local. When you shop local, you are supporting your community members. You are helping your neighbor pay their mortgage, buy their groceries and send their children to college. You are helping them keep the lights on. When you shop with a local business, your hard-earned dollars support the place you call home. Local revenue supports city services like parks, roads, the fire and police departments. Local businesses also put money back into the community by donating to local charities, causes and supporting our schools. Local business owners are well informed about our community and can suggest relevant products and can better understand your needs. The Greater Guthrie Chamber is here for our businesses. Together, we work to foster growth in our local economy, creating a better business climate and a higher quality of life.

As we get through this and life begins to go back to normal, or maybe a new “normal,” it is my hope that we continue to support our neighbors and local businesses by choosing Guthrie.

You just never know, you may discover some great products and services all while helping build a strong community. When communities begin to fray around the edges, it is up to us, who care deeply about the fate of our community, to pull out the needle and thread and fix the worn edges before the damage becomes irreparable.

As we get through this and life begins to go back to normal, or maybe a new “normal,” it is my hope that we continue to support our neighbors and local businesses by choosing Guthrie.
