The Coyle Bluejackets moved their Homecoming 2018 game up to avoid the forecasted weather and for the first quarter the team looked very sluggish as the Medford Cardinals came ready to play. The Bluejackets eventually righted the ship and won the key district opener 44-20.
The Cardinals struck first when Brayden Keller got behind the Coyle defense for a 39-yard touchdown pass from Angel Gonzales. The 6-0 lead lasted three minutes as Coyle quarterback Brendon Weathers evened the score at 6-6 at the 6:02 mark.
Medford went into their bag of trick plays and despite everyone knowing it was a fake on fourth down, Gonzales found Caleb Haynie wide open for a 40-yard gain. The Bluejackets held and with 1:31 in the first quarter, Weathers hooked up with Damon Caine on his first touchdown of the night when he out jumped the Cardinals defense back for a 54-yard touchdown. Coyle took the lead at 12-6 after the first quarter.
The playbook was opened as Medford ran a reverse on the kick-off good for 50 yards and the Cardinals were in business. Haynie scored from 21 yards out and got the PAT for a 14-12 lead for the visitors.
Coyle turned it over on downs at the 13-yard line when Medford fumbled it right back to the home team. Caine scored and Austin Adams achieved the PAT and the home team was out in front for good at 20-14. Weathers then found Myklie Davis wide open down the sidelines for a 60-yard touchdown pass and the two hooked up for the PAT making it 28-14 with 3:09 left in the first half.
The key to the game was the third quarter as Medford started with the ball and drove down the field before turning it over on downs. The Bluejackets would then methodically play keep away and kept the ball over eight minutes on the ground and Salvador Jackson scored the touchdown and the PAT to give Coyle a 36-14 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter.
The teams traded possessions for most of the fourth quarter until Caine got an interception and returned it 61-yards for the touchdown. Weathers scored the PAT and it was 44-14 with 5:53 to go in the game. The visiting Cardinals bounced right back when Gonzales found Keller for the second time in the game behind the Coyle defense for a 39-yard touchdown and the final score of the 44-20 game.
“We knew we had to tackle them, and their passing game gave us trouble, but it was a huge win to start district play,” said Coyle Head Coach Shane Weathers.
Coyle ran 71 plays to Medford’s 50 in the game. Brendon Weathers was 10-for-18 with 181 yards passing and ran the ball 27 times for 125 yards. Taylor carried 10 times for 60 yards and Adams carried 15 times for 40 yards as the Bluejackets racked up 247 yards on the ground. Five different receivers were targeted for passes for three touchdowns. Weathers and Jackson led the defense with eight tackles each and Wyatt Powers contributed seven tackles.
The Bluejackets (3-1,1-0) get the week off next week because Copan has dropped football this year and they then travel to Yukon on Oct. 5 for a district showdown with Southwest Covenant (4-0,1-0) who will play Deer Creek-Lamont prior to the showdown.
