Guthrie’s boys’ and girls’ soccer clubs ended their home schedules with a pair of Tuesday night wins over district foe Western Heights, leaving one game remaining in the regular season.
It was also senior night for both squads, as GHS honored 13 players and one trainer at midfield in between the girls’ and boys’ games. In keeping with tradition, each senior was joined by family members and bestowed gift baskets by the family of an underclassmen player while athletic director Jon Chappel introduced them over the stadium speakers.
Coach Mat Engle and the Lady Jays kicked off the evening with a 3-0 win over the Jets, snapping their four-game losing streak with two goals from freshman Ally Carey in the 28th and 73rd minutes. Allyson Lozano put in the third goal off of a throw-in during the 57th minute.
Guthrie finished with seven shots on net compared to just two for Western Heights, along with five corner kicks to zero. They’re 5-8 head into the final game of the regular season.
Senior night festivities were held following the conclusion of the girls’ game, then the Bluejays’ boys pulled off a 4-0 shutout to win their first game in three tries. Like their female counterparts, they also move to 5-8 overall with one match left to go before postseason action begins next month.
Both Guthrie squads finish the regular season on the road Thursday, April 24, against Bishop McGuinness, who is the top-ranked team in District 5A-2 for both boys and girls.
