The Guthrie LadyJays will open the 2018 OSSAA Class 5A State Tournament this Thursday when they take on (28-5) Piedmont High School at 11 a.m. at Firelake Ball Park in Shawnee.
Piedmont enters Thursday having dominated their regional, beating Western Heights 12-0 before sweeping Guymon in the final two games by a combined score of 25-5. Piedmont is 17-1 against Class 5A opponents this season and 4-1 against 6A opponents.
Guthrie enters the tournament on a hot streak, winning 14 out of their last 16 games. Their two losses came against Carl Albert, the two-seed in the state tournament.
The winner will advance to play the winner of (30-5) Pryor and (22-13) Collinsville on Friday at 11 a.m.
Pryor is who eliminated the LadyJays in their last trip to the state tournament in 2015, defeating them 2-0 in extra innings. Pryor has not lost a game against 5A opponents this season, winning all 22 games. They defeated Carl Albert 5-0 back on August 25th in the Shawnee Tournament.
The other half of the bracket features (24-16) Tahlequah facing off with (26-8) Durant and a District 5A-1 rematch with (29-9) Woodward taking on (27-4) Carl Albert. Carl Albert swept Woodward this season beating them 13-3 and 12-2.
The state championship will be played on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The cost of each session is $7 for student and adults.
