Guthrie Jr. High softball claims Chisholm title

Guthrie Junior High’s softball team posted a 5-0 record to win the Chisholm Tournament in Enid on Saturday and is now 16-4.

The Lady Bluejays won twice on Thursday’s opening day of the tournament, first beating Newkirk 14-0 as Savannah Ingle threw a perfect game with six strikeouts in the four-inning contest, while Brylan Shephard let the offense with three of the team’s 11 hits.

In a 4-3 win against host Chisholm, the Lady Bluejays were trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning when they rallied as Ingle drove in the winning run to help her own cause after coming in to pitch two hitless innings in relief of starter Holland McLemore. Shephard had two hits (both doubles) and Ingle also had two hits for Guthrie.

On Friday, Guthrie walloped Velma-Alma 14-1 and Blackwell 12-0.

Ingle went the distance in the three-inning, run-rule opener, striking out four while allowing three hits, and received support from her team’s 11 hits -- three by Shephard, who scored three runs.

The Blackwell game was over before fans could even get settled in the stands as Guthrie scored all 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The game was halted in the third. This time, McLemore would get the win, teaming up with Emry Hebensperger for a nohitter. Shephard and McLemore each had two hits.

In Saturday’s title game against the Crescent Lady Tigers, the Lady Bluejays prevailed 3-0, scoring all three runs in the fourth. McLemore recorded the win, pitching all five innings and allowing one hit and three walks. Crescent pitcher Trinity Rice had her team’s only hit, in the first inning.

Home games this week against Noble and Piedmont closed the regular season for Guthrie.
