Bluejays win season opener 35-23 in Ponca City, Home opener Friday night

The Guthrie Bluejays opened their 2022 football season with a come from behind 35-23 win in Ponca City on August 26. The Bluejays fell behind early trailing 10-0 after the first quarter. Ponca City scored the first touchdown after a Guthrie fumble and turned it into a 45-yard touchdown pass and a 10-0.

Guthrie took the ensuing kick-off at their own 22-yard line and drove the ball 78 yards in a little over five minutes to get on the scoreboard at 10-7. The Wildcats then responded with another score to make it 16-7 with four minutes to go before halftime.

The Wildcats then fumbled at the eight yard line and Guthrie scores making it 16-14. The Bluejays then intercept a pass right before the half and score from 14-yards out and all of the sudden Guthrie has a 21-16 lead at the half.

The third quarter sees Guthrie turn another Wildcat turnover into points and with six minutes to go in the third quarter it is 28-16. The Wildcats close the gap to 28-23 early in the fourth quarter, but Guthrie then takes ten plays and six minutes off the clock to score again, and it is 35-23. The home team made one last push but ran out of time against the Guthrie defense on the one yard line as time expired.

Isaiah Hammons had three touchdowns, Tyrin Eaton had one and Hayden Calvert had the last touchdown all on the ground. Guthrie ran the ball 48 times for 260 yards in the game. Calvert was 5-for-12 with three interceptions for 86 yards as the Bluejays outgained the Wildcats 346-17.

The Guthrie defense held the Wildcats ton-11 yards rushing on 26 attempts and 14-for-29 passing with the two interceptions for 189 yards and 178 net yards.

The Bluejays will have to clean up the penalties as they got called for 11 penalties for 114 yards while the Wildcats had two penalties for ten yards called/ Guthrie opens at home against former district foe Woodward at 7 p.m. Friday night.
