The Guthrie Bluejays got off to a hot start down in Dallas, TX this week, as the defending Class 5A Champions won their season opening tournament in convincing fashion.

The Bluejays cruised to a victory in the Lake Dallas Falcon Four-Ball Tournament, beating McKinney North High School by 28 strokes. The Bluejays finished with a team score of 309, McKinney North finished with 337, and The Colony finished in third place with a team score of 362

“We did a really good job overall,” Guthrie Head Golf Coach Ric Meshew said. “The field wasn’t as tough as we wanted it to be, but there were still some pretty tough teams in it. Overall we played pretty well, so I’m happy with that.”

The Four-Ball tournament format is different than most tournaments the Bluejays will play in this season. The format required two players to team up to play their own ball but the best score was recorded. While the best score was taken for the team score, each individual also kept their own score, as well. There were no individual awards given out for the tournament.

If there were individual awards given out, Luke Morgan would’ve walked away with first place, shooting a 73 on the day. The next closest score was Brady Hirzel from Guthrie, who finished with a 74.

Morgan partnered with Robbins, who shot a 77,  to get a team score of 68, which was good enough for the duo to win first place in the tournament. Brady Hirzel’s 74 along with Jaxson Hirzel’s 91, combined to shoot a 73, which was good enough to finish in second place. Luke Roach shot an 85, while his partner, Luke Dale shot a 91 to give them a team score of 77.

“I’m really pleased with shooting 309,” Meshew said. “Luke was the low-man again, but I was really proud of Brady’s 74. I thought he did a really good job today.”

Meshew was also excited about the parent turnout in Dallas.

“We greatly appreciated all the parent support down there,” Meshew said. “To drive three and a half hours, that was awesome. I hope they come to all of the tournaments.”
