Damon Caine Jr.

Dear Damon,

Let me start this off by saying I’m sorry. I made a mistake and you deserve an apology. When I sat down to do the Top 10 Sports Moments of the Year for Logan County, I left you off the list. Call it an oversight or a mishap; I’ll call it what it was—stupidity.

How on earth could I make a list of Top 10 moments this year and not include you on it? You led the entire state in rushing yards. You set the 8-man rushing record. You'll likely go down as the best running back in Coyle history.

Did you ever create a player on NCAA Football? My brother Grant and I used to love doing that. Grant would create a running back and I would create a quarterback and we would ramp up the sliders all the way to the right to make ourselves unstoppable and then we'd begin a season together. I remember one year we decided to dedicate the season to the running back. We would run the triple-option and absolutely dominate teams. It was like having a cheat code.

As the season went on, the running backs numbers were getting so outrageous that the game would glitch every time it showed his stats for the year. Instead of numbers, it started to show letters. I guess the game couldn’t comprehend that a running back could put up those kinds of numbers. And as good as those numbers were, they paled in comparison to yours.

Your senior season was the definition of video game numbers. Seriously, I mean 3,254 rushing yards on 301 carries? 52 touchdowns? Dude, that’s insane! You weren’t even a running back last season and you have the eighth-most rushing yards all-time in the state for a single season? You were playing wide receiver last year and switched to running back and set the 8-man record? Your 52 touchdowns are the fourth-best in the state’s history; I mean that doesn’t make sense.

Know what else doesn’t make sense? How you put up one of the most historic seasons in the state and I left you off our Top 10 list. It’s laughable and I’m embarrassed. I hope you can forgive me for my mistake and not hold it against me. If you read this, I’d love to hear from you. I would like to apologize in person. Shoot me an email. If you don’t hear from me in a couple of days it’s probably because I’ll be playing NCAA Football. I’m going to create another cheat code. I’m going to make it just like you.
