Guthrie Gardening

I sat on the porch and watched the storm belch and spew. Rain, fat and voluptuous, sliced the air by the thousands and plummeted to the earth. Lightning cracked and I levitated four inches with a terrified screamed. I should have realized its closeness; the hairs on my arms had been tingling their warning. Regaining my bearing I recalled the last two years of drought and attempted a gracious nod. We should be thankful for the rain. I should be thankful. But with the blessed moisture comes unpredictable troubles. More ticks, more fleas, more grasshoppers and bees. The bees don’t really pose a problem, but it rhymed. The point I’m trying to make here is that bad often accompanies good. As I write, something begins to tickle the back of my neck. Frantically, I grab what’s crawling on me. Turns out it’s a blood-sucking tick - no doubt the horrid thing was about to tap into my spinal fluid instantly killing me. I regain my literary composure and begin to peck away at the keyboard again; thinking how best to eradicate other dangerous pests, without annihilating the frogs, birds, ladybugs and praying mantis. I remember reading something in my Master Gardener classes about “Earth Friendly Gardening.” The concept is simple...be earth friendly. For example, choose not to use harsh chemicals and insecticides. One suggested pest control measure of Earth Friendly Gardening includes using something called Diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is finely ground skeletons of fossil diatoms. It resembles flour. The dusty pesticide has tiny sharp edges that scratch the waxy outer layer of soft-bodied insects causing them to die from dehydration. Diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to birds and mammals, but may kill some beneficial insects. Earth Friendly Gardening also encourages collecting rain water in retention barrels. Mine are currently overflowing as is my gratitude for the recent, abundant moisture, even if it means narrowly escaping being drained of my life’s blood by a mammoth tick. I’m embracing the good.

Osburn charged in Craigslist case
Jun 18, 2013 | 0 views | 0 0 comments | 11 11 recommendations | email to a friend | print
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation’s (OSBI) Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force has arrested a fifth person for solicitation for sex with minors using the Craigslist cover. Michael Dean Osburn, 42, of Edmond was arrested this weekend after a two-month investigation. It is alleged that Osburn traveled to Guthrie believing he was meeting a 15-year-old boy for sex. Osburn was arrested in the 200 block of Woodlawn Drive in Guthrie and booked into the Logan County Jail on a complaint of Violation of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act and solicitation of sexual conduct of a minor with the use of technology. Osburn made his initial court appearance yesterday in Logan County Court and had bond set at $250,000 by Judge Rob Hudson with the next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 22. Logan County Assistant District Attorney Jack Bower said, “Osburn was being disrespective to the judge and to the proceedings. He told Hudson his rights were being violated and his rights were not read to him. The offensive statements he made to the undercover officer were also bad. For that reason we asked for a high bail and it was granted.” In the police affidavit to the court, it is alleged that Osburn first made contact with the alleged 15-year old on May 30 with very graphic text messages. After setting up a meeting that day, Osburn was a no show. Subsequent alleged texts on May 31, June 4, June 10 and June 13 eventually led to a meeting being set up in Guthrie on June 14 at some apartments by the Best Western Territorial Inn. Osburn was taken into custody by Guthrie Police Officers as he exited his vehicle and was taken to the police department before being transferred to the Logan County Jail. This is the fifth case that the OSBI has had using Craiglist. Previously the task force has arrested Johnie Larue Jones, 40, of Coyle; Bobby Jesse Anderson, 26 of Edmond; Wallace Walters, 46, of Guthrie and Steven Patrick Conners, 51 of Oklahoma City with a similar set-up. Jones, Anderson and Conners are all due back in court on June 27 for a preliminary hearing in Logan County District Court. Walters’s next court appearance is July 12 over at the Payne County Courthouse. All four men are free on bond at the current time.

Guthrie Gardening
Jun 18, 2013 | 0 views | 0 0 comments | 4 4 recommendations | email to a friend | print
Osburn charged in Craigslist case
