Peggy Louise Maker, 85, of Guthrie, OK, passed away in her sleep November 29th, 2022. Peggy Louise Colibert was born May 28th, 1937, to Marion and Violet (Larry) Colibert in Guthrie.
Peggy graduated from Guthrie High School in 1955. Peggy and her Jr High Sweetheart, Tommy Maker got married in a blizzard on February 4th, 1957.
Her early jobs included working at the Dairy Maid; as an operator at the local phone company; and a clerk at the Water Department. Then in 1962 after the birth of their first child, Peggy and Tommy moved to their current home and helped run the family business Maker’s Glass Shop. Peggy kept the books as well as trying to keep Tommy and Delbert in line until they sold the company in 2005 Peggy had a lifelong passion for flowers. This last summer she could still be found working in her front flower beds. She also used that passion in service. For years she planted and nourished the flowers at The West Guthrie United Methodist Church. Even today, people talk about how beautiful the flowers were there while she and Tommy took care of them.
Peggy was way ahead of her time. While working full time and raising a family she started a Side Hustle. After taking some classes in cake decorating, she discovered she had a special talent. In the years following that, she baked and decorated cakes for people all over Logan County. Starting with small birthday cakes she progressed until she was creating multi tier wedding cakes for some of the largest weddings in Guthrie.
Without a doubt though the most important thing to Peggy was her family. Her children, Gary and Barbara never had to question her love. They grew knowing what unconditional love and support was. When grandkids started showing up, she was beyond excited to be a grandma. She made everything she could special for them. It was her that started the tradition of decorating sugar cookies cut out as turkeys each Thanksgiving. A tradition that lives on with mostly great-grandkids decorating them today. Peggy was blessed with good health that allowed her to be involved with her great grandchildren as well. Some of the families most cherished pictures of her holding a new baby or reading to a great grandchild.
You did not have to be related to Peggy to be part of her family though. If she ever measured you on her wall you were in her heart and would not be forgotten.
There is a truism in the Maker family. “If grandma doesn’t like you, something is wrong with you.”
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Violet Colibert and her sister, Carolyn Johnson.
She leaves behind her husband, Tommy Maker of Guthrie; son, Gary Maker of Guthrie; daughter, Barbara Doughty and husband, Manny of Edmond, OK; five grandkids; 9 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services for Peggy were held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 2, 2022 at Smith Memorial Chapel. Interment was followed at Summit View Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
