George Frederick Dreessen, Jr was born on March 2, 1932, to George Frederick Dreessen, Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Dreessen (Killingsworth) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
He grew up on the family farm near Seward. He attended grade school in Navina and went to high school in Guthrie. He was in ROTC and on the track team where he excelled earning multiple medals in hurdles and dashes.
After he graduated high school, he continued working on the family farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 1955. He was stationed at Fort MacArthur, California where he was training to be a radar officer. When his father became too ill to run the farm, he received a hardship discharge in March of 1956 to return home.
He met Joan King after returning home and their relationship grew. They were married on August 15, 1958, and then moved to Oklahoma City where he began working in a convenience store. During this time, he decided to further his education by attending college at Central State University. He attended college for a few years before he got hired by the U.S. Postal Service where he made his career and retired in 1991.
He was always a big sports fan, especially OU football. He might have been a bigger fan of teaching sports especially to his son, step-granddaughter, and friend’s grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching baseball, golf, and professional football. He began playing golf and would play once a week with his golf buddy at different courses around Oklahoma City. The loser each week would have to pay for lunch following the round.
He was fascinated with airplanes all of his life. When he was a boy, a pilot landed a biplane near the family farm and took him for a ride. He was hooked and eventually took flying lessons. He neared completion for his pilot’s license when he became ill and never completed his training.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Marvin Dreessen and his wife Melba, and sister Marie Adams and her husband Bill.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Dreessen of Guthrie, son Darius Dreessen and his wife Kim of Oklahoma City, stepgranddaughter Leigha Blackwell of Moore, and step-great grandchildren Kyler Kelsey and Bayleigh DeJear of Moore.
