Guthrie girls run for third, boys earn seventh at Runyan Relays

The GHS girls’ track and field team picked up its third-straight top three finish and the boys earned seventh place at the Ponca City Runyan Relays meet on Tuesday.

Three of the Lady Jays’ relay teams and two individual runners picked up first-place wins at the 11-school meet, which was divided into large and small school events. The girls 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay all went to Guthrie along with Cora Leach’s win in the 300-meter hurdle and Lily Rechlin’s win in the high jump competition.

Leach, a junior, earned the Lady Jays 10 points with her first-place time of 48.85 seconds, nearly five whole seconds faster than the second-place runner. She’s now won the 300-meter hurdle event in back-to-back meets with her first-place run at the Piedmont Invitational back on March 27.

Rechlin added 10 more team points after reaching a height of 5-02.00 in the large school high jump. She’s finished first in the high jump at all three of Guthrie’s meets this year.

Freshman Addison Long won third place during the same 300-meter hurdle race as Leach, posting a 55.88 for six team points. Senior Mary Vaughan finished as runner-up in the girls 100-meter hurdle, and sophomore Taylor Shroder earned second during the girls 3200-meter run.

The Lady Jays totaled 128 points as a team when all was said and done. First place in the large school meet went to Yukon with 132 points, followed by Choctaw in second with 131.

The Bluejays’ boys’ day was highlighted by runner-up finishes for both junior Isaiah Blevins and sophomore Cade Barton. Blevins ran a 2:02.40 during the 800-meter run and Barton jumped a 6-00.00 in the high jump event as Guthrie ended the day in seventh place as a team. Choctaw took home first place for the boys large school.

Both Guthrie squads will strap on the spikes next when they head up to Jenks High School on Thursday, April 10, for the annual Jenks Invitational.
