Maryanna (Moon) Martin was born February 2, 1930, in Guthrie, OK to Don and Ruth Ellen May Moon, and left us on December 24, 2024, after a long and wonderful life. February 2, 1930, was a cold, snowy day. The family doctor came and said it would be a long time before the baby would be born. The doctor left and naturally the baby came early, and had to be delivered by the grandmother, Anna Moon, so the baby was named Mary Anna. Maryanna graduated from Guthrie High School in 1948. She married James L. Martin on October 16, 1948, a marriage that lasted almost 71 years.
She is survived by her five children, Elaine Abernathy (Clayton) of Edmond, Dr. Dean Martin (Andrea) of Tulsa, Von Martin (Karen) of Edmond, Jami Vance of Edmond and Ted Martin (Kristina) of Dallas, TX. Maryanna is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Torrey Abernathy, Rebecca Abernathy, Devon Cantrell (Jeremy), Marin Marzolf (Derek), Elizabeth Martin, Kali Clark (Josh), Tara Martin, Derek Vance (Heather), Kristen Vance, Caroline Vance, Hope Martin and Ella Martin, and 10 greatgrandchildren: Trent, Katelyn, Phillip and Travis Bailey, Kyrin McKay, Cooper and Charlee Cantrell, Stella and Karsten Clark and Mark Michael Vance. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Ruth Kinney of Edmond. Maryanna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Don Moon, Jr., two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Martha Larsen, son-in-law Mark Vance, granddaughters Caitlin Abernathy and Lily Martin, and grandson Jonathan Martin.
In 1968 James bought a small independent insurance agency. Since he couldn’t afford to hire a secretary, Maryanna was drafted. She didn’t know anything about insurance, but she became an insurance agent and worked with James until they retired in 1996.
Maryanna was a long-time active member of the First United Presbyterian Church. She was a past president of Chapter AD of P.E.O. and Jonquil Garden Club and past moderator of Presbyterian Women. After retiring she served as a volunteer with the Guthrie Library Literacy Program. She enjoyed bridge, reading and having all the big family together.
