How to take advantage of tax-free weekend

Tax-free weekend returns in Oklahoma this Friday through Sunday.

During the three-day period, the 4.5% Oklahoma state sales tax will be waived, along with the county and municipal taxes.

The Oklahoma Tax Commission has stated that any clothing or footwear less than $100 is exempt from taxes. The savings advantage applies to both in-store and online purchases.

Not included in the sales tax discount are any clothes or footwear meant for athletic activities or protective use. The discount also does not apply to supplies that students may need in preparation for their new school year, despite the close timing of the weekend to the first day of school in August.

Clothing that is covered by the discount is, according to the Oklahoma Tax Commission website, “all human wearing apparel suitable for general use.” That list includes coats, jackets, hats, formal wear, etc.

The full list of exempt clothing items can be found on the Oklahoma Tax Commission website in the “Help Center: Businesses” tab.

All retailers are required to participate in the sales tax holiday. The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 and concludes at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4.
