Bluejays blank Shawnee; playoffs begin at Elgin

Guthrie High tuned up for the Class 5A football playoffs by posting a 43-0 rout of Shawnee (0-10) in the regularseason final. The Bluejays (8-2) now travel to Elgin (8-2) for the first round of the playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday. Elgin lost to Midwest City 23-21 last week with 11 seconds to go to fall to second place in its district. Elgin’s other loss was to Noble, which lost to Lawton MacArthur 59-54 Friday night and missed the playoffs.

“Elgin is a run-first team, with a quarterback that likes play-action, Guthrie head coach Kelly Beeby said. “They are a well-coached team in their first year in Class 5A, up from Class 4A. They are an upstart team and young. They play a 3-4 base defense and they beat Lawton Mac earlier in the district season.”

In the Shawnee game last week, the Bluejays took a 14-0 first-quarter lead on Jaylen Harper’s 2-yard run and Isaiah Hammons’ 1-yard run. Noah French kicked both extra points.

Harper and Hammons each scored their second touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 36-0.

Guthrie ran the ball 51 times for 284 yards and had only 33 yards passing. Shawnee had 29 yards total offense (3 rushing yards).
