Bluejays to celebrate Senior Night on Friday

Guthrie High’s football team closes out its home schedule Friday with Senior Night as Lawton Eisenhower (2-6) provides the opposition.

The Bluejays (6-2, 2-2 in the district) hope to bounce back after getting routed by Carl Albert (6-2) 41-7 last week in Midwest City. Guthrie’s aim now is to finish third in the district, although it would mean going on the road for the playoffs.

The Bluejays will say goodbye to a group of seniors that has seen a lot of action over the past three years. That list includes Tyrin Eaton, Jackson Walters, Brayden Chaney, Jaylen Chelf, Javen Brentlinger, Landen Hirzel, Zach Henry, Willy Clymer, Josh Dement, Isaiah Hammons,CarsonWilder,AndrewAllen, Tikori Pierce and Justin Berryhill.

Senior trainers Hailey Drake and Peyton Hayes also will be honored as part of the pregame ceremony. The band, the cheerleaders and the ROTC also will honor their seniors at different points during the game and at halftime.

Against Carl Albert, the Bluejays trailed 31-0 at the half before Hayden Calvert’s touchdown run in the third quarter avoided the shutout. The Titans ran for 397 of their 465 yards of total offense, while the Bluejays could only manage 167 total yards.

The Eagles (2-6, 1-3) come to town this week after beating Shawnee 17-12 last Friday for their first district win of the year.

The Bluejays will need to win this weekend and next Friday in Shawnee (0-8, 0-4) to claim third place ahead of Piedmont (6-2, 3-1).

The Wildcats play Bishop McGuiness and Carl Albert these next two weekends to close out their Class 5A-2 district schedule. Things could get interesting if Piedmont should upset either the Irish or Titans.

District 5A-1 is still wide open with as many as five teams fighting for the four playoff spots, which will determine where Guthrie goes in the first round of the playoffs.
