Guthrie third at Edmond Santa Fe cross country

Guthrie High School’s cross country teams traveled to Edmond Santa Fe last Saturday and both teams finished in third place as Piedmont dominated both races.

The Lady Bluejays scored 121 points -- trailing only Piedmont (30) and Noble (98) -- and had runners finish 4-13-16-19-69, while Piedmont finished 1-3-5-6-15, a tough act to keep pace. There were 15 schools and 112 runners in the girls Class 5A race.

Kamryn Boller led Guthrie with the fourthplace finish in 20:21.98, which was 2:07 behind Piedmont’s Lily Scheck, who ran 18:54.7 to win the race. Hannah Smith was 13th (21:42.18); and sophomores Raley Hooper and Peyton Read finished 16th and 19th with respective times of 21:52.74 and 22:04.24. Junior Cameron Ireton ran 24:22.14.

Freshman Kristie Botello and sophomore Gracie Ball also competed.

In the boys race, the Bluejays scored 139 points with 7-8-34-38-52 finishes. Piedmont won the meet with 36 points (12-3-5-25), 45 better than second-place Guymon (81). There were 17 teams and 122 boys in the 5A event.

Piedmont has established itself as the favorite for the state meet, but regionals come first.

Junior Mason Mayer and senior Lance Sallee were the Bluejays’ top two finishers in 7th and 8th with times of 16:51.20 and 16:59.28 on the 3.2-mile course. Reese Fricke of Piedmont won in 16:11.07.

Considering the strength of the field, Tyler Waggoner’s 18:03.20 and Terry Beckett time of 18:06.46 were solid efforts to get them into 34th and 38th places. Sophomore Riley Wilkerson was timed in 18:32.76.

Freshman Isaiah Blevins and junior Eli Fortney also had strong finishes at 54th and 55th.
