Bluejays cross country teams dominate Hennessey meet

Guthrie High’s varsity cross country teams set the pace in their divisions and the junior high’s cross country teams each placed second in Saturday’s meet at Hennessey.

In the boys varsity race, Guthrie scored 43 points to defeat the Oklahoma City Knights Home School team by 14 points. The Bluejays finished 2-3-10-13-15 to win the title, while the Knights finished 6-8-9-16-18 for their 57 points.

Mason Mayer and Lance Sallee finished 2-3 in the 5K race with times of 17:55.15 and 17:59.94, respectively. Corbin Galt of Perkins-Tryon won the race in 17:18.84.

Terry Becket (18:52.40), Tyler Waggoner (18:59.81), and Eli Fortney (19:06.9) finished 10-13-15 to wrap up the scoring for the Bluejays. Isaiah Blevins (19:15.18) and Riley Wilkerson (19:22.25) finished in 17th and 20th places to give Guthrie seven runners in the top 20 in a field of 142 runners.

JJ Countess, Kallon Cyphers, Isaac Talley, Lael Dressen, Gideon Hiel, Reid Watson, Corbin Madison, James Bickell, Jeremiah Waters, Emilio Cota also competed for the Bluejays.

In the Lady Bluejays meet, they scored 62 points to Kingfisher’s 73 points to win the title. The Lady Bluejays finished 1-6-8-10-37, while Kingfisher went 4-11-12-16-30. Junior Kamryn Boller continued her stellar season with the first-place finish in the 3,200-meter race in a time of 13:24.9 that was 22 seconds ahead runner-up Abby Guffy of Cherokee.

Raley Hooper (14:03.8), Peyton Read (14:13.12) and Hannah Smith (14:17.53) finished 6-8-10 to give the Lady Bluejays four finishers in the top 10. Gracie Ball placed 37th. Kristie Botello, Cameron Ireton, Cheyenne Gaymon and Brooklyn Toomey also were in a field of 126 runners.

In the girls junior high meet, Taylor Schroder placed second in 6:35.69 as the junior Lady Bluejays finished 2-11-14-15-16 to garner their 58 points. The OKC Knights Home School team won the meet with 48 points, finishing 1-4-5-9-29. Jaydin Alexander (7;12.66), Addison Poupard (7:14.62), Avelyn Sallee (7:17.62) and Morgan Thomas (7:21.18) wrapped up the scoring for the junior Lady Bluejays.

There were 90 runners in the race that included Laina Richardson, Maci Girard, Riley Piersol, Micah Countess, Haven Hudson, Lily Grace Wilson, Serenity Sampson, Lindy Huddleston, Kaydence Blevins, Riley Wilson, Jaedyn Dolan, Morgan French, Avery Foshee, and Marissa Bell.

In the boys junior high meet, the OKC Knights Home School edged Guthrie 70-73 to win the meet. The Knights finished 3-5-18-19-25, while the junior Bluejays went 7-10-12-21-23 for their points. Josiah Dement (9:28.12) and Jaxson Mayer (9:34.50) were among the top 10 finishers for Guthrie. Aiden Foster (9:38.66), Easton Smedley (9:59.34) and Terry Brooks (10:03.06) completed the Guthrie scoring.

The junior high boys’ race had 59 runners in all, and Guthrie entered Ryen Duncan, Nathan Cutter, Aiden Hardin, and Jaxton Brown as additional runners.

The high school teams face a stern test this week at Edmond Santa Fe, which is hosting meet on the same course as the one used in October. The girls run at 10 a.m. on a 5K course; the JV girls will run at 10:45; the boys at 11:05; and the JV boys will follow at noon. Admission is $5 a car. Crest Foods warns they will tow any cars that are not their customers Saturday.

It should be a loaded meet with Piedmont, Bishop Kelly and other Class 5A schools.
