American Red Cross Reports Critical Need for Blood Donors

The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to schedule blood and platelet donations as a sharp decline in appointments has caused the national blood supply to fall by several thousand units in recent weeks.

According to the Red Cross, scheduled donations account for approximately 90% of all blood collected. The recent drop comes as the organization prepares for the busy summer trauma season, a period between Memorial Day and Labor Day that often sees an increase in serious injuries from vehicle accidents, recreational activities and sportsrelated incidents.

“Every minute matters,” said Dr. Emily Coberly, medical director for the Red Cross. “Having a readily available blood supply is critical for patients experiencing severe bleeding and other medical emergencies.”

The Red Cross said summer can be a challenging time for blood collection due to vacations, school breaks, severe weather and extreme heat, all of which can impact blood drives and donor participation.

Blood donations are also needed for patients undergoing surgery, new mothers, trauma victims and those living with chronic illnesses that require regular transfusions.

To encourage participation, donors who give blood or platelets between June 1 and June 28 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice and will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards.

Eligible donors can schedule an appointment by visiting Red-CrossBlood.org, using the Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Most healthy individuals who are at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent where permitted, and weigh at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate.
