Welfare Check leads to shooing in Guthrie

At approximately 4pm Tuesday, a Logan County Sheriff’s Deputy visited a home in the 600 block of East Warner to perform a welfare check on a female. On arriving the deputy encountered a male and female out in front of the home. The male was armed with a rifle and was wearing a bulletproof vest. When confronted the male took the female back into the house.

Sergeant Anthony Gibbs of Guthrie Police Department reported that the responding deputy called for assistance, and five Guthrie PD units were nearby on calls and responded very quickly. Additionally, a Logan County medical director was also close and was able to be onsite for all subsequent activity, should he be needed. The officers took up multiple positions outside the home and were able to get the assailant to return on his own outside the home.

According to Gibbs, after coming back outside, the assailant charged at officers and pointed his rifle at them, forcing two Guthrie PD officers and the Logan County Deputy to fire, incapacitating the assailant. The officers and medical director were able to begin lifesaving care to the assailant. They were able to stabilize him, and he was Medi-flighted to a local trauma center for critical care. As of approximately 3pm today, the assailant had just come out of his second surgery and was still in ICU, in critical-but-stable condition.

After the shooting, officers entered the home and found the female unharmed.

As part of standard procedure, Guthrie PD requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to the circumstances of the shooting. At this time, due to continuing investigation, no details about the assailant have been released. Gibbs stated that a probable cause affidavit should be filed by Friday or early next week, pending the OSBI’s investigation, and there will be more information available at that time.
