Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, a diesel locomotive hauling 61 cars was northbound on Burlington Northern/Santa Fe railroad tracks when it fatally struck a man near the intersection of Beemer Rd. and Hwy 77 0.4 miles north of Guthrie.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol's Lt. Lane said that a white male, later identified as 23-year-old Christopher Kapps Smith of Garland, TX, was seen by the locomotive’s pilot walking on the tracks moments before the accident.
“He was walking down the rail,” Lane said. “They blew their horn at him. He jumped off the tracks and as the train went by, he jumped back in front of it.”
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Medical Examiner due to massive trauma after he failed to yield to multiple warnings signaled from the train.
“A couple hundred yards south of Beemer is where he was hit,” said Eric Harlow, Guthrie Fire Chief, who was a first responder on the scene.
The train had two people on board at the time of the accident. No other injuries were reported.
