When I first started working downtown almost 10 years ago it had been decades since I had shopped downtown, except for Near and Far, I LOVED that place! Back then, G Gallery and Glass Studio would leave their displays lit at night and I would drive my children by to see how beautiful the glasswork was, but I never stopped in! My assumption was that downtown, the downtown that I had adventured freely in as a child, was given over to tourists and that there just wasn’t anything that would interest me for my day to day… and that was largely true for a time.
As I began working in the downtown area, however, I was astonished at the number of shopping choices that were offered. Really groovy clothing, hand made crafts, shoes, toiletries and medicines, musical instruments, books, candy, coffee, copies, dishes, tack, feed, keys, and so much more was right in our business district! Who Knew?!!! Of course, we do have a lot of antique shops, but that’s a good thing as well, because they aren’t the only thing. And downtown is not the only place in Guthrie to shop, there are super cool places all over the county.
Shop Guthrie first and always. Get a subscription to the paper and keep track of all the businesses that advertise and have stories written. Stop in when you see a new business opening – you just may be surprised at what you find. Don’t give your tax dollars to Oklahoma County, let your spending power turn the wheels of progress in LoCo as the dollars circulate throughout town supporting hundreds of people and businesses!
I guess I am trying to say is, don’t be like me before I saw the light. Come On Downtown (or anywhere you can find the goods in LoCo) and see what you can find! Invest in our community first!
