Bluejays pitch shutout in home opener, 50-0
The Guthrie Bluejays football team had to wait a week to open the home portion of its schedule but treated the crowd to a 50-0 rout against former district opponent Woodward (now in Class 4A) Friday night.
Senior Isaiah Hammons scored from 2 yards out to open the scoring, and the kick from Noah French made it 7-0 after the first quarter, but the Bluejays were just starting to roll.
Four touchdowns in the second quarter pushed the margin to 35-0 by halftime.
Junior quarterback Hayden Calvert, who accounted for four touchdowns, started the scoring at the 11:33 mark on a 1-yard run and then Calvert connected on the first of his two touchdown passes in the game, hooking up with Tyrin Eaton from 17 yards out. Calvert (7-of-11 passing) then scored his second rushing touchdown of the night with 1:16 to go before connecting on a 78-yard pass play with senior Jaylen Chelf with 46 seconds before the half.
Guthrie fans showed more than just football game spirit. The GHS Student Council took up a collection of $1,400 for Dakota Samarco, a Woodward football player recovering from a serious injury in preseason football practice, and school officials presented the check to the Woodward administration at halftime.
The crowd also witnessed 2022 state wrestling champions Hayden Simpson, Eli Kirk and Khaleah Kirk receive their championship rings. The scoring wrapped up in the third quarter as Hammons scored again, this time on a 7-yard run; French added his sixth PAT; and junior Alexander Clark added a 14-yard run. The Bombers snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety to make it 50-0.
The Bluejays ran the ball 50 times for 273 yards and out-gained the Bombers 428-42 in total yardage.
It is Guthrie’s Homecoming Week and the Duncan Demons come to town Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Duncan lost its opener last week to host Lawton (Class 6A) 63-20.
