In special session on Tuesday evening, the Guthrie Board of Education accepted the resignation of Terry Pennington who represented ward #2 for less than six years.
In August, Pennington announced his intent to resign during a board meeting, stating he needed to focus on his health. He delivered his official resignation to the board clerk on September 10, 2018 following the board’s last meeting.
Pennington said he was proud of some changes to the district during his time on the board.
“We got more police officers in the schools. We got a process to require them to have bids before they spend money,” Pennington said. “And then as the president of the school board, when the bond issue passed to build the first new school that we’ve had in years, that really thrilled me.”
Pennington also disagreed with some of the actions the board took recently and decided it was time to step down.
“I did my best for over five years,” Pennington said. “I left. My timing for leaving the school board was done to require an election to replace me instead of an appointment. Education in Oklahoma needs to be about the kids, teachers and the parents, not about the school board, not about the administration.”
Since Pennington served less than half of his term, an election is required to fill the remainder of the term which runs through 2021. The filing period for the seat is in early December with an election in April. If more than two candidates file, an election would occur in February, with a run-off in April.
The current board members have 60 days to appoint an eligible citizen to fill the seat until the election, according to a press release.
In order to be eligible, the candidate must be a high school graduate (or G.E.D. equivalent), have resided in ward #2 for at least six months, have been registered to vote at the address within the ward for at least six months, possess no felony convictions within the last fifteen years and not be related to any employee of Guthrie Public Schools within the second degree.
Interested parties who possess the qualifications should contact Jana Frey, Board Clerk, for an application. Applications will be accepted until Monday, October 8, 2018 at 4:45 p.m.
