The Fourth of July holiday is quickly approaching, and there are multiple ways to get engaged and enjoy America’s birthday with Independence Day along with tips and guidelines .
Here are some tips to stay safe in the heat in Oklahoma: Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water and fluids with electrolytes and avoid caffeine and alcohol. If you’re sweating a lot, you can replace lost salt and minerals with snacks or a sports drink. Signs of dehydration include dizziness, dry mouth, and headache.
Protect your skin Apply sunscreen regularly and wear a hat.
Dress appropriately
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and as little as possible when you’re at home.
Be aware of heat alerts Pay attention to the heat index and air temperature and be aware of Heat Watches and Heat Warnings. If a medical heat alert is issued, it means that paramedics have responded to five or more heat-related illness calls in a 24-hour period.
Look out for others
Keep an eye on children and pets and check on elderly neighbors. You can also use the buddy system if you’re working outdoors.
Recognize signs of heat illness Symptoms include dizziness, nausea or vomiting, headaches, rapid heartbeat, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, and weakness. If you’re not feeling well, seek medical care promptly.
