James Inhofe Passes Away at 89

The state of Oklahoma is mourning the loss of a prominent political figure, former US Senator James Inhofe, who passed away last night after a sudden illness over the holiday weekend. Senator Inhofe was a dedicated public servant who represented Oklahoma in the Senate for nearly three decades, becoming Oklahoma’s longest-serving U.S. Senator and leaving a lasting impact on both the state and the nation.

James Inhofe was born on November 17, 1934, in Des Moines, Iowa, but his family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when he was young. He graduated from the University of Tulsa with a degree in economics in 1959 and went on to serve in the United States Army. After his military service, Inhofe entered the business world, working in aviation and real estate before embarking on a long and influential political career.

Inhofe’s political journey began in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where he served from 1967 to 1969. He then moved on to the Oklahoma State Senate, serving from 1969 to 1977. In 1978, Inhofe was elected Mayor of Tulsa, a position he held for six years. His tenure as mayor was marked by significant infrastructure improvements and economic development initiatives that helped shape the city’s future.

In 1986, Inhofe was elected to the US House of Representatives, representing Oklahoma’s First Congressional District. During his four terms in the House, Inhofe built a reputation as a staunch conservative, focusing on fiscal responsibility, national defense, and limited government. His strong positions on these issues resonated with his constituents and laid the foundation for his later Senate career.

In 1994, Inhofe was elected to the US Senate, succeeding David Boren. He quickly established himself as a leading voice on defense and environmental issues. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Inhofe was a vocal advocate for a strong national defense and worked tirelessly to support the men and women of the armed forces. His dedication to military readiness and veterans’ affairs earned him respect across party lines.

One of Inhofe’s most notable roles was as Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. In this capacity, he became a prominent and often controversial figure in the national debate on climate change. Inhofe was a well-known skeptic of climate change science, famously calling it a “hoax” and challenging regulatory measures aimed at addressing global warming. While his views sparked significant debate, Inhofe’s influence on environmental policy was undeniable.

Inhofe was also instrumental in shaping transportation policy. He championed numerous infrastructure projects that brought federal funds to Oklahoma, improving the state’s highways, bridges, and public transportation systems. His efforts were crucial in modernizing Oklahoma’s transportation network and supporting economic growth.

Throughout his career, Inhofe remained committed to conservative principles, advocating for limited government, lower taxes, and individual freedoms. He was a steadfast supporter of the Second Amendment and worked to protect the rights of gun owners. Inhofe’s legislative accomplishments reflected his dedication to these core values, making him a beloved figure among Oklahoma’s conservative base.

Inhofe’s impact extended beyond policy and legislation. He was known for his strong work ethic, unyielding determination, and personal integrity. Colleagues and constituents alike admired his willingness to take principled stands, even when they were unpopular. His straightforward approach and dedication to his beliefs earned him a reputation as a reliable and trustworthy leader.

Inhofe retired from the Senate in January 2023, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. His departure marked the end of an era in Oklahoma politics, leaving behind a legacy of service and accomplishment. In his farewell speech, Inhofe expressed gratitude to the people of Oklahoma for their support and trust throughout his career.

U. S. Representative Kevin Hern released the following statement regarding Inhofe’s death: “Senator Jim Inhofe was a dear friend and mentor, a titan in Oklahoma, and a highly effective leader in DC. Tammy and I are keeping Kay and the rest of the Inhofe family in our prayers. Jim spent his life in service to his country, both in uniform and in the halls of Congress. Watching and learning under his leadership has only strengthened my sense of duty, and I have always used his character as a guidepost in my endeavors. Lynda and I join Oklahomans everywhere in mourning this great loss and praying for his family.”
