Heather’s Pawn recently celebrated three decades of proudly serving the pawn loan needs of Guthrie’s residents. Heather’s has worked to provide a quality location and solid service for both their pawn customers and their retail customers.

Owner Heather Grey opened her pawn shop in 1994, shortly after moving to Guthrie after her stepfather, Spencer “Red” Mullins, planned to retire from the pawn businesses he owned in Oklahoma City and Del City. Heather had worked for him at those stores during her college years, though running a pawn business was not her long term plan.

“It was not something I wanted to do,” Heather says. “I was going to college and was going to be a psychiatrist.” But then Red retired and talked to her about opening a store of her own. Together they targeted smaller towns near the metro because “he felt a small town would be better for my personality,” she says.

Circumstances worked in Heather’s favor. They had focused on Guthrie as the best place but struggled to find a property that suited them. “I got very lucky, we drove through Guthrie for several weeks,” she said. “We had just about given up on it. We kept driving through, and found this place that was Mazzio’s Pizza. Every time we drove through, it was open. But on our last drive through, it was closed and had a ‘for sale’ sign.” So she bought it and got to work.

She has really become devoted to Guthrie, though. “Everybody is really friendly here, I’ve gotten to know so many of my customers, I get invited to weddings and funerals,” she related.

From that, Heather feels she hasn’t done enough for the community in her time here. “I’ve been doing small things here and there. When I hit the 30-year mark this year, I realized I needed to work a little bit harder in the community.” To that end, she has recently sponsored fundraising events for both Logan County Paws and Claws and God’s Food Bank.

Customers who had come in and purchased items over the course of the month of April were automatically entered into the drawing. She offered several interesting and useful items, including rechargeable flashlights, a commemorative silver dollar, and a set of 14K gold and diamond earrings.

“I feel a strong connection to the people who have supported me all these years, I wouldn’t be here without them.” She wants to keep that feeling going from this point on, and she’s asking for the community’s help and guidance. “I’m looking at some different things this year to try to get a little more involved in the community. And I’m always open to suggestions, if anyone wants to come by and talk to me about anything, that would be great.”
