Horse Feathers Equine Center Inc. has been a part of the Guthrie Community since 2007. The organization’s mission is to help rescue horses and ensure that they are free from abuse.
“We do rescue and rehabilitation of horses, as well as education to prevent the abuse of horses,” said President and CEO Cheri White Owl. “Our mission is to save horses from abuse, and after rescuing them we want to provide shelter and we ultimately hope to help them find a proper home.”
White Owl soon realized that through her organization there was a unique opportunity to help uplift senior citizens in the community by providing socialization for seniors and the horses at the center. About a year ago, a program for seniors called the “Ole Timers Club” was created.
“Many senior citizens want to be around horses,” White Owl said. “They often have fond memories of time spent with horses and other outdoor activities and this is an excellent way to help provide a chance for our horses to get interaction, and for senior citizens in the community to spend time together. It gives them an outlet to be in the community.”
The Ole Timers Club meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Volunteers help the senior citizens walk through the equine center and support them while they enjoy the horses. From 12 p.m. to 1p.m. the club meets for lunch and social time in the newly renovated loft barn which has heat and air conditioning to enable the meetings to occur year-round.
“We love seeing their interactions when they join us on Wednesdays,” White Owl said. “They are such an important part of our community, and we love being able to give them time to interact with our horses. During the lunch hour we often find our Ole Timers Club members talking to our miniature horse Snowflake.”
White Owl stressed the importance of volunteers for the program’s success.
“We are so thankful for volunteers who help make the members experience successful,” she said. “We are always accepting new volunteers, as well as donations for the Wednesday lunch hour and other support for our mission.”
