Guthrie track teams sweep titles at Shawnee
The Guthrie track teams travelled down to Shawnee on April 8 and overcame a rough day of wind to claim the titles in the boys and the girl’s division. The Bluejays scored 134.273 points to beat out Seminole (104.546 points) and Shawnee (94.546 points). The Lady Bluejays scored 155 points to finish ahead of Putnam City West with 111 points.
As was the case a couple of weeks ago in Bethany, the Guthrie teams got solid performances out of their relay teams to garner a lot of points. In the 4 x 100 meter relay, the boys (Mason Tilley, Deandre Jones, Tyrin Eaton, Jaylen Chelf, Kyran Axtel) took first place in a time of 46.86. The girl’s team (Jadora Jennings, Cheyenne Gaymon, Anjewl Murillo, Sara Smith and Alyana Wallace) finished in fifth place in a time of 1:01.23.
In the 4 x 800 meter relay, the Lady Bluejays finished first in 11:14.86 to get 20 team points. Hannah Smith, Kamryn Boller, Kaitlyn Leuty, Raley Hooper, and Payton Read were scheduled as part of the team. The Bluejays “B” team (Eli Fortney, Jexton Colbert, Noah French, Tommy Biggs, and Heathrow Hammer) finished in second place behind Ponca City in 9:06.59 as Ponca City finished in 9:05.97. In the 4 x 200 meter relays, both teams brought home second place finishes which got each team 16 points. The Lady Bluejays (Smith, Gaymon, Murillo, Read, and Brooklyn Toomey) ran 2:33.66 just behind Putnam City West and their 2:32.74 winning time. The Bluejays (Chelf, Eaton, Jones, and Tilley) ran 1:38.92 to finish behind Seminole at 1:38.60.
The Lady Bluejays would seal their championship on the last race of the day with a win in the 4x 400 meter relay beating Noble with a time of 4:39.03 compared to 4:47.39. The Bluejays did not run in the final event.
Besides being busy with relay teams, Gaymon won the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdle events. Gaymon ran 17.57 in the 100-meter race and 50.98 in the 300-meter race. The Lady Bluejays also got points from Mary Vaughn (19.00) with a second place finish and Jennings with a fifth place finish. Nakhiva Eaton finished just out of the final points with a sixth place finish. In the 110-meter boys hurdles Gideon Hiel (17.46) and Lael Dressen finished in second and third respectively for 14 team points. Dressen would finish in third place in the 300-meter event in a time of 46.65.
In the distance races, the 3200 meter race had the Lady Bluejays Leuty finishing in fifth place and for the Bluejays Waylon Ball was in eighth place as the best finishers. In the 1600 meter races, Hannah Smith and Boller finished in second and third places with times of 6:10.51 and 6:12.82, with teammate Cameron Ireton in fifth place at 6:38.98. That gave the Lady Bluejays 16 team points with those finishes. On the boy’s side Mason Mayer (4:58.45) and Tyler Waggoner (5:02.69) finished third and fourth respectively to garner ten valuable team points. Lance Sallee and Jaxon Harden also ran but were out of the points standings. In the 800-meter races, Hooper finished in sixth place for the lady Bluejays and Hammer finished in fourth place for the Bluejays.
The 100-meter dash saw Chelf and Tilley finish in first and third place with times of 11.46 and 11.51 respectively. The 400-meter dash saw the Lady Bluejays Read win the race in 1:08.72 and Wallace finish in third place in 1:12.80. In the boy’s race Landen Dixon (57.19) and Noah French (58.95) finished in fourth and fifth places respectively. In the 200 meter boys’ race, Eaton and Nate Benford finished in sixth and seventh place.
In the field events, Toomey led the Lady Bluejays with a first place finish in the pole vault clearing 9’6”. Vaughn tied for third place at 8’’ and Savanah Rodriguez was in sixth place at 6’06”. Wallace took third place in the high jump at 4’06” and Eaton was also third in the boy’s event at 5’02”. Jennings took second place in the long jump at 14’10” and Jones took second for the Bluejays at 19’06”.
In the boy’s pole vault, Dayton Hoaglin (9’0”) and Zeb Talley (8’06”) finished in fifth and sixth place when it tokk a vault of ten feet to win the event.
Blake Swartz got a sixth place finish in the shot put (38’05.5”) and an eight place finish in the discus (87’05”) for the Bluejays to close out the scoring on the day for the Bluejays.
The teams are scheduled to travel to Bristow this Friday for a meet.
