Abell Community Church will host Cowboy Jim Garling for a gospel concert on Sunday night, August 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Jim Garling is a well-respected singer-songwriter based in Guthrie who performs across the state and nation in a variety of venues. Along with his solo career, he also performs regularly with The Songs of Sage and with The Byron Berline Band. One of his favorite collaborations is with singer and fiddle player, Susanne Woolley, when they weave story telling through music and spoken word to take the listener to another time.
Realizing the importance of imparting the love of the history and musical heritage of the West, he also gives fiddle and guitar lessons. He has influenced countless young musicians in the area in the many years that he has been in Logan county. When he’s not out of town touring he can usually be found on Saturdays at the Double Stop Fiddle Shop jamming with Byron Berline and other musicians-student and veteran.
Serving the rural community between Guthrie and Crescent, Abell Community Church was first conceived of after several rural school districts were consolidated in 1947. Beginning their meetings as Sunday school in the Abell School building, the surrounding residents soon filled the space and ultimately bought the school building and built on when the school closed.
Named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Romaine Abell who donated the land for the site of the first consolidated school, Abell still serves the fine folks who first began meeting there, along with families who have chosen the simple rural life in the area. The non-denominational congregation welcomes visitors to their services. If you are looking for that “Old time religion” you need look no further.
Residents from Guthrie, Crescent, and the surrounding areas, are invited to this unique worship time. Abell Church is located between Guthrie and Crescent, just off Highway 74C. Just take Hwy 74 north to 74C and follow it until you see the signage for Abell Community. For information call (405) 820-4803.
Cowboy Jim encourages all to attend, “Looking forward to being back with the folks at Abell Church. Come join in!”
