Peace day

For the past 20 years people all over the globe have determined to be unified in their celebration of PEACE for one day each year, every September 21st. The way that the celebrations manifest are as varied and diverse as the individual persons themselves.  In Guthrie, OK, there will be a celebration with music. California musician, Kyra Gordon, will be having a house concert at Lucy’s Loft in downtown Guthrie starting at 7:00pm on September 21.

Kyra has sung her way from LA to West Virginia to Paris and back home to Oakland, with stops all along the way to deliver her intimate style of concerts. Most recently she has been back in the Bay Area working on numerous musical projects. Her repertoire includes her own original music, the music of Janis Joplin, blues, funk, and sing-alongs so there is sure to be something for everyone.

Peace. A very powerful word – and a very powerful force. Whether you define peace as a tangible absence of malice or fear or you perceive peace as a concept, an ideal, an almost ethereal state of existence, Peace is what mankind has perpetually attained to.

There are many in the history of the world who have eschewed peace in an effort to take advantage of the power that chaos affords to the corrupt and greedy. Holy and scholarly writings refer to this state as being at the very least, immoral.

Humans have sought peace through various means throughout the history of the world. Concerted efforts to define and exist in a state of peace have driven entire cultures and religions. Peace has healed. Peace has encouraged. Peace has empowered. Peace is elusive.

This year is the 20th Anniversary of International Peace Day.  According to the website which has been established for the day, “The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.”
