Pictured above, the State Capital Building was struck by lightning Saturday, causing crews to take down the steeple on Tuesday afternoon. Rillis Howard from the Oklahoma Historical Society said they had to move into action quickly to keep it from falling into the street.
“We got a call Monday about the steeple being hit with lightning and it was kind of just flopping in the wind,” Howard said. “There was concern about it falling into the street and we didn’t want anyone to get hurt, so we decided to take it down. When we got it down, the steeple was actually split in half.” There is no word on if the state will put a new steeple on top of the building. For now, they are just removing the steeple and capping it off.
