One of Guthrie’s best kept secrets will kick off July 8. Camp JOY (Jesus, Others, You), is a local nondenominational bible camp, located just 10 minutes from downtown Guthrie near Highway 74C. Situated on 10 acres, campers ranging from seven years old through high school will enjoy age-appropriate camp activities and curriculum throughout the entire month.
“I grew up going there,” said Alyssa Roper, Camp JOY administrator. “It [Camp JOY] has actually been in the community since the ‘60s. My fondest memory is knowing Dan and Kay Curtis [who have both since passed away from cancer]. They were camp directors when I was there, and I started going at age 11. They had a huge impact on Camp JOY. After Dan passed away, Kay kept it running with a team of people and once she passed, a group of us who have been involved for years have kept it going. We’ve tried to keep the values and principles they instilled the exact same.”
Camp JOY is nondenominational, meaning they don’t employ one specific doctrine, and isn’t run by or affiliated with one specific church. Instead, many of the churches in Logan County band together to make Camp JOY possible. According to Roper, they are there just to love the kids and love God. Camp JOY is a place where kids can slow down, enjoy nature, and come together and have fun.
Roper shared, “Camp JOY is small so they [the kids] are able to have a one-on-one time with the counselors, get to know people and speak their hearts as kids. They feel safe, can trust the people there, and know we have their hearts in mind.”
Activities such as swimming, fishing, archery and air riflery are part of their program. In the past, the Logan County Sheriff’s Department has come out and instructed the kids on air rifle shooting. Camp JOY also brings in missionaries from across the world to teach the children what it’s like to live in other areas. One of this year’s missionaries includes Roper’s sister who spent time in Kenya. She will teach the children what it’s like to live in East Africa.
Registration for Camp JOY is currently open and there is a new online registration option.
